Doctor of Education Management & Innovation Pedagogy

Swiss Doctorate by Publication

The Doctor of Education Management & Innovation Pedagogy (by Publication mode) program adopts a research-based approach from the very beginning. Unlike other programs, we recognize that simply teaching research and leaving doctoral students to navigate on their own makes it particularly challenging to complete a dissertation that meets international standards, such as the rigorous requirements of SIMI Swiss.

To address this challenge, the Doctor of Education Management & Innovation Pedagogy (by Publication mode) program has developed a training and research guidance model that combines: (1) a structured research training pathway, (2) module-based mentorship to support doctoral students in completing their research step-by-step, and (3) foundational business knowledge at all levels (a curriculum on management and administration aligned with national competency frameworks at the doctoral level), along with the integration of professional certifications at Level 7 EQF.

Specifically, the program uses the Modular Supervision Model, dividing the research process into distinct modules, each handled by a specialist. This approach provides structured, flexible supervision, leveraging expertise to enhance research quality and efficiency. By assigning manageable tasks, the model ensures comprehensive support, fosters collaboration, and ultimately leads to high-caliber doctoral research.

Doctorate Thesis Stage

Doctoral Thesis

A Doctoral Thesis is the comprehensive final assignment that doctoral students complete at the end of their program, designed to encapsulate the knowledge and skills gained throughout their studies. Unlike traditional exams, the Doctoral Thesis requires students to apply their learning to real-world education problems or challenges in their field.

Key Features of a Doctoral Thesis:
  • Practical Application: The thesis typically involves solving a real-world education problem, conducting research, or developing strategies for management, operations, or education improvement.
  • Integration of Knowledge: Students must synthesize concepts from multiple courses, demonstrating their ability to apply knowledge effectively in a professional education context.
  • Research Component: The thesis often includes a significant research element, requiring data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support conclusions and recommendations.
  • Presentation and Defense: Upon completion, students present and defend their thesis before a panel of faculty or industry experts, justifying their methodology, findings, and recommendations.
Benefits of a Doctoral Thesis:
  • Real-World Experience: Students tackle real-world education challenges, gaining practical experience in areas such as management, operations, or strategy development.
  • Skill Development: The process hones critical thinking, problem-solving, research, and communication skills.
  • Portfolio Piece: The completed thesis serves as a showcase of the student’s abilities, valuable for career advancement or job interviews.
  • Networking Opportunities: Projects often involve collaboration with industry professionals, expanding the student’s professional network.

In essence, the Doctoral Thesis is the culmination of the Doctor of Education Management & Innovation Pedagogy (by Publication mode) program, allowing students to demonstrate their expertise and readiness for professional challenges in the education world.

Research Publication Stage

1. Modular Supervision Model

Structure: The Modular Supervision Model organizes the research supervision process by dividing it into distinct modules, with each module (such as a chapter or specific section) assigned to a specialist in that particular area. For example, one supervisor may oversee the introduction and literature review, while another focuses on methodology, and a third guides the data analysis and results sections. This structured approach ensures that each part of the research receives expert attention tailored to its specific requirements.

Benefits:

  1. Expertise and Specialized Guidance:
    • Targeted Expertise: Each module is supervised by an expert in that specific field, ensuring that students receive high-quality, specialized advice tailored to the unique demands of each section of their research.
    • Enhanced Quality: Specialized supervisors can provide deeper insights and more nuanced feedback, elevating the overall quality of the research.
  2. Focused and Efficient Support:
    • Clear Responsibilities: By assigning specific sections to different supervisors, responsibilities are clearly delineated, reducing overlap and confusion.
    • Timely Feedback: With multiple supervisors handling different modules, students can receive more timely and relevant feedback, facilitating steady progress.
  3. Comprehensive Coverage:
    • Holistic Development: Each module is addressed thoroughly, ensuring that all aspects of the research are well-developed and cohesive.
    • Balanced Perspectives: Exposure to multiple supervisors brings diverse viewpoints and methodologies, enriching the research process.
  4. Flexibility and Adaptability:
    • Adaptive Supervision: As the research evolves, the modular approach allows for adjustments in supervision. If a particular section requires more attention, additional expertise can be allocated without disrupting the entire supervision framework.
    • Scalability: This model is scalable to accommodate varying research complexities and student needs, making it suitable for a wide range of doctoral projects.
  5. Enhanced Collaboration and Networking:
    • Collaborative Environment: Working with multiple supervisors fosters a collaborative academic environment, encouraging interdisciplinary approaches and innovative solutions.
    • Professional Networking: Students build relationships with several experts in their field, expanding their professional network and opening up more opportunities for mentorship and collaboration.
  6. Efficient Management of Workload:
    • Balanced Workload: Distributing supervision across modules helps manage the workload more effectively for both supervisors and students, preventing burnout and ensuring sustained productivity.
    • Resource Optimization: Institutions can better utilize their academic resources by matching supervisors’ strengths to specific research needs.
  7. Personalized Learning Experience:
    • Tailored Support: Students receive personalized guidance that aligns with their research interests and strengths, fostering a more engaging and supportive learning experience.
    • Skill Development: Exposure to different supervisors’ expertise helps students develop a broader skill set and a more comprehensive understanding of their research topic.

Conclusion: The Modular Supervision Model offers a structured and flexible approach to doctoral supervision, leveraging specialized expertise to enhance the quality and efficiency of the research process. By dividing supervision responsibilities into manageable modules, this model ensures comprehensive coverage, fosters collaboration, and provides personalized support, ultimately contributing to the successful completion of high-caliber doctoral research.

2. Research Supervisor Process

SIMI Swiss understands that providing support and guidance to doctoral students throughout the research process and international publication not only reduces unnecessary stress and challenges for the doctoral students but also contributes valuable and high-quality research to society. With the unique Modular Supervision Model, doctoral students will gradually complete their PhD research, publish international papers, and meet the exceptionally rigorous standards of SIMI Swiss.

3. Guidance on Publication

SIMI Swiss’s Doctorate by Publication program is renowned for its guidance and support, helping students not only complete their research but also successfully publish two international papers. The international publication guidance process at SIMI Swiss is implemented through the following steps:

  1. Guidance on selecting the appropriate journal
  2. Providing templates and methods for completing the submission
  3. Submitting the paper to the journal
  4. Guiding revisions based on feedback from the journal’s scientific board
  5. Finalizing the paper for publication

4. Guidance on Revisions and Format Support

After submitting a research paper to an international journal, the editorial board typically provides feedback, often suggesting revisions to improve the paper before it can be accepted for publication. At SIMI Swiss, students receive comprehensive support to successfully navigate this critical stage of the publication process. Support activities include:

  • Detailed evaluation of the feedback with guidance from the research supervisor;
  • Assistance in refining, analyzing, and revising the paper to ensure it meets the journal’s standards;
  • Guidance in reformatting the paper according to the journal’s specific requirements;
  • Coaching on how to professionally and effectively respond to reviewer feedback. With personalized guidance and formatting support, researchers can confidently resubmit their revised paper, significantly increasing the likelihood of acceptance and publication.

This process ensures that their research meets the high standards of international journals, enhancing both their academic credibility and professional expertise.

2. Supply 5 mandatory courses in Education Management and Pedagogy at the Master's level helps review core knowledge

Core knowledge is a particularly important aspect for research-based doctoral programs like DoctorEdu, but it is often not provided by universities under the assumption that candidates have already acquired this knowledge during their Master’s studies. However, according to SIMI Swiss’s internal research, 72.4% of Doctoral candidates in education transition from other disciplines (only 28.6% are from the correct field), and among the 28.6% who are from the correct field, 82.6% pursue their Doctorate after 5 years. Typically, after 5 years, foundational knowledge may have been forgotten or become outdated.

Understanding this need, DoctorEdu is the only program in Switzerland that offers the entire specialized course material from the Master’s in Education (MasterEdu) program, which is valued at over 12,750 CHF when delivered in the Micro Credential format. This set of study materials is not a book, nor is it publicly available; it is a fully-fledged course that includes a syllabus, learning outcomes, lectures, assignments, exams, and more.

DoctorEdu candidates can use these materials to review foundational knowledge or even utilize them for teaching at their own institutions.
